2 Must-Have Designs For a Small Kitchen

I lived in a small studio for two years.

I lived in a small studio for two years. While I was comfortable with my bedroom/living space and my walk-in closet seemed expansive, my narrow galley kitchen posed the biggest problem. No matter how clutter free my countertops were, there was never enough space to chop veggies and mix cookie dough. I did have plenty of vertical storage, but it was difficult to reach.

If only I'd had the Stove Chop ($49), my cooking routine might have been more manageable and less of a mess! The walnut stovetop cutting board made by San Francisco-based studio Jeremiah Collection fits right over your range, maximizing counter space and keeping cooking ingredients close at hand. The walnut goes through two rounds of grain-raising process, so that the wood has minimal reaction to water, and it's finished with food-safe butcher block oil. Better yet, it's just pretty!

5 Multipurpose Pieces I Wish I’d Had in My Old Studio

Multipurpose Furniture For Small Space Living

In a city apartment, storage space is the biggest luxury one can have. Living in a studio for two years, I made the most of my diminutive interiors by storing everything from laundry detergent to luggage to cocktail napkins in my walk-in closet. When my kitchen cabinets reached their maximum load, bulk bags of paper towels and bottles of beaujolais nouveau would be stored right along with my intimates and party dresses. Not the most convenient arrangement, but you do what you have to do — right?

If only I'd owned a few multipurpose furniture pieces to help lighten the load, my small-space living might have been more bearable. I've recently discovered some furnishings in particular that I really wish I'd had in those days. If you're living in a little lair, you'll be pleased to discover my multitasking finds! Check them out.
