Madeline Weinrib's Climbers & Ramblers Carpet Series Makes Its European Debut

Madeline Weinrib will debut the Climbers & Ramblers Series at the Alberto Levi Gallery in Milan from April 16 through May 19, in conjunction with Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile.

Madeline Weinrib will debut the Climbers & Ramblers Series at the Alberto Levi Gallery in Milan from April 16 through May 19, in conjunction with Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile.

The carpet series Climbers & Ramblers was conceived over two years and first presented at Ralph Pucci International. The series consists of 14 carpets and runners, each hand knotted in Pakistan by accomplished artisans using handspun vegetable-dyed wool. The motifs present in the Climbers & Ramblers series adapt traditional Persian historical motifs in modern ways.

In an essay on the series, art critic Dominique Nahas wrote,

Weinrib's mastery has been honed through years of experimentation and innovation in the field. Such idiosyncratic virtuosity creates a riveting design sense that comes across as innate, effortless, and as inevitable as nature itself. In her work, Madeline Weinrib references calligraphy, sumi ink, and arabesques that recall (at times subliminally, sometimes more directly) the shapes of budding organic forms like leaves and flowers. The remarkable ease of her combinations attracts us to the subtle language of nature.

Madeline Weinrib Debuts Stationery For Dempsey & Carroll

If, like me, you've been lusting after a Madeline Weinrib rug for years, but haven't popped enough pennies in your piggy bank to provide for the purchase, I've got a treat to ease the heartache.

If, like me, you've been lusting after a Madeline Weinrib rug for years, but haven't popped enough pennies in your piggy bank to provide for the purchase, I've got a treat to ease the heartache. The painter and textile designer is moving from the rug factory to the paper mill with a new line of luxury stationery for Dempsey & Carroll. Featuring hand-bordered cards and envelopes with block-printed liners, the fancy boxed stationery has the same exotic sophistication we've come to love from the lady. My favorite is the Isabelle in Pink Set ($60), which features the Pantone-crowned color of 2011, honeysuckle. But there are also more notes in dapper navy blue. Better yet, a portion of proceeds benefits Project Mala, a nonprofit working to eliminate child labor in the Indian carpet industry. The papers may not cover your nine-by-12 living room floor, but for only $60, they sure are high on style.

A Nursery For Natalie Portman: A Boy's Room

With so many celebrity pregnancies in the news, I've got nursery design on the brain.

With so many celebrity pregnancies in the news, I've got nursery design on the brain. One of the mommies-in-waiting that I'm most excited about is Natalie Portman; she has flawless style, and there's no doubt her first child will be a beautiful one. So she's a perfect candidate for my first nursery design project! The word's not out yet on the gender of her baby, so I decided I'd have to design rooms for both! I've already designed a room for a baby girl, so next up: a boy's room.

To get a feel for Natalie's style, I took a look back at photos of her former West Village, NYC apartment. It's clear that Natalie is a traditionalist at heart, although she did integrate a few trend pieces here and there. She's also keen on button tufting, pattern, cool colors, wallpaper, and Madeline Weinrib rugs. She also went for a polished look but didn't go overboard on "glam" furnishings.

Natalie clearly has a soft spot for classic furniture, so I began with the Williams-Sonoma Home Fontaine Inlay Chest ($1,950); it'll last a lifetime for her little one, and it's gender-neutral. Next, I chose the Nursery Works Empire Rocker ($1,100) that feeds her love of tufted upholstery and cool colors and is also very high-end and sophisticated. I added pattern with a green, chicken coop wire-esque Madeline Weinrib Chi Chi Kari Rug and the fun, interactive Graham and Brown Frames Wallpaper ($45). I also created a youthful, tropical, wild theme with Elephant Bookends ($385), a CB2 Dodo Bird Pillow ($25), and the Anthropologie Green Leaves Framed Art ($2,200). A Nursery For Natalie: A Girl's Room

To get a feel for Natalie's style, I took a look back at photos of her former West Village, NYC apartment. It's clear that Natalie is a traditionalist at heart, although she did integrate a few trend pieces here and there. Like her personality, her aesthetic is also quite reserved; there aren't any bold focal points or bright colors. She's also keen on button tufting, stripes, cool colors, wallpaper, and Madeline Weinrib rugs. She integrated a little glitz with chandeliers but didn't go overboard on "glam" furnishings.

Natalie clearly has a soft spot for classic furniture, so I began with the Williams-Sonoma Home Fontaine Inlay Chest ($1,950); it'll last a lifetime for her little one, and it's gender-neutral. Next, I chose the Nursery Works Empire Rocker ($1,100) which feeds her love of tufted upholstery and cool colors and is also very high-end and sophisticated. To create a soft pink and gray palette, I went with Graham & Brown's pink Countess Wallpaper ($75), from the brand's new Elixir collection. To coordinate, I selected the Madeline Weinrib Pink Westley Rug. And as a nod to the way Natalie and fiancé Benjamin met, I found a painting of A Pair of Ballerina Shoes ($215), by artist Liat Sterling. Click the product images to shop the rest of this nursery!

Roundup: Treasures With Tassels

I'm swooning over this Hollywood Regency Gilt Tassel Bench upholstered in blue and white ikat from Madeline Weinrib.

I'm swooning over this Hollywood Regency Gilt Tassel Bench upholstered in blue and white ikat from Madeline Weinrib. With the gilding, the curves, the luxe fabric, and of course, the tassels, it's totally ostentatious. But sometimes a girl is entitled to flaunt it! Unless you're using them as curtain tiebacks, tassels in general are merely a decorative feature — a finishing touch. This one's an unlikely find, but there are plenty of furnishings featuring ornamental tassels to go around. Check out a few that I'm liking below!

Do You Mix and Match Your Table Linens?

New York-based textile designer Madeline Weinrib recently went shopping with the New York Times for Summer table linens.

New York-based textile designer Madeline Weinrib recently went shopping with the New York Times for Summer table linens. Given her choices, it's obvious that this designer prefers a diverse mix of linens over a staid matched set. Hopping from store to store, Weinrib grabbed poppy floral Marimekko oilcloth, graphic Missoni napkins, and organic reed and shell placemats.

Going for more of a mix over a matchy-matchy look can keep a table setting fresh, but you have to have an eye for juggling pattern and color to pull off the effect. I've been known to mix and match my linens at home. How about you?

Roundup: Ikat and Suzani Pillows For Valentine's Day

Painter, designer, and purveyor of all things ikat Madeline Weinrib is trying to change the face of Valentine's Day this year, offering up her beautiful handmade ikat and suzani pillows and clutches as V-Day gifts in place of red roses and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate.

Produced historically for dowries and in marriage customs in Central Asia, suzanis do make a fittingly romantic token of affection. If you live in New York City, I'd definitely recommend picking up one for yourself or your sweetheart at her atelier on the sixth floor of ABC Carpet & Home — look at that heart-shaped ikat bolster! Otherwise, here are some equally chic and Valentine's-Day-appropriate ikat and suzani pillows:

Roundup: Chevron's Goin' On

I spotted this Black Zigzag Lamp ($185) at Emilia Ceramics, a San Francisco-based ceramic import shop, and felt a revived love for chevron patterns.

I spotted this Black Zigzag Lamp ($185) at Emilia Ceramics, a San Francisco-based ceramic import shop, and felt a revived love for chevron patterns. The contemporary lamp is handmade by Mexican pottery studio Talavera Vázquez in the city of Dolores Hidalgo. I've been drooling over Madeline Weinrib's cotton flatweave zigzag rug ever since I saw it, but aside from that, I've never felt much affinity for chevron/zigzag patterns. I thought I'd see what else is out there. So, check out my chevron finds.

Ask Casa: Madeline Weinrib Rug

Hi Casa, I have fallen deeply in love with a beautiful Madeline Weinrib rug, The Brooke Chenille in Watermelon.

Hi Casa,
I have fallen deeply in love with a beautiful Madeline Weinrib rug, The Brooke Chenille in Watermelon. The Tibetan pattern, the bright pink color . . . sigh. Unfortunately, fate is cruel and we cannot be together. It's about $2,000 for the 6-x-9 size. Eek! Do you have any suggestions for similar rugs with a more Ikea-type price?
Thank you so much!!!
