Be Inspired by the Paris Chanel Holiday Decorations!

In case you can't make it to Paris to windowshop in person, I thought you might like a peek at the Chanel window that's currently decked out for the holidays.

In case you can't make it to Paris to windowshop in person, I thought you might like a peek at the Chanel window that's currently decked out for the holidays. I love the white palette used throughout the window, and the dolls in their little Chanel suits add a childlike charm to the look.

To create something similar at home, use thick tagboard to create the tree. An exacto knife or hole punching tool will help with rendering the pattern, while sharp scissors are needed to create the undulating waves of the tree. You can use the cardboard tube from a leftover wrapping paper roll for the tree's trunk (give it a quick spritz with white spray paint).

To create the backdrop's doily pattern, try using an overhead projector. It will give you the most accurate results. However, if you're artistic or fearless (or both), you can create the pattern freehand. Start with a white wall and fill in the doily cutouts with either pieces of craft paper cut to size and shape or a contrasting paint color in the palette of your choosing.

Do You Have a Julbock?

The Julbock, or Yule-goat, is made of straw and wrapped in red ribbon.

The Julbock, or Yule-goat, is made of straw and wrapped in red ribbon. It has a long history in its home country of Sweden, going back 300 years. Now its job is to guard presents at Christmas, but it was originally a stand-in figure for the devil in a pre-Christian Swedish tradition that has generally been absorbed into Christmas holiday rituals.

Re-create Rue's Ravishing Holiday Decor!

Rue magazine and HGTV recently teamed up to host a party during Atlanta's Lavish lifestyle blogging conference, and to no surprise, the entrepreneurial team whipped up decor that was not eye-catching but thrifty!

Rue magazine and HGTV recently teamed up to host a party during Atlanta's Lavish lifestyle blogging conference, and to no surprise, the entrepreneurial team whipped up decor that was not eye-catching but thrifty! To give the event space (the Bradford Gallery) the Rue touch, executive editor Anne Sage and stylist Christina Loucks Ahumada of Anora Grey created a hanging ornament and branch installation. Sage says she was inspired by "the spare, spartan beauty of bare Winter branches and our extremely small budget — we spent around $200 for the whole installation!"

Nice and New: IKEA Holiday Décor

I think holiday décor is best collected year after year, with a mix of homemade and store-bought ornaments.

I think holiday décor is best collected year after year, with a mix of homemade and store-bought ornaments. But I must admit I am really digging a few of IKEA's new Christmas items. This moose-shaped Sprallig Coat Rack ($19.99), for instance, is so quirky and fun — very Scandinavian modern. I definitely recommend DIY-ing what you can to give your holiday decorations a personal touch, but I won't protest if you toss in a few of these new products.
