I've totally fallen for the geometric base of this West Elm Geo Side Table ($199). I love how it has such a graphic presence but simultaneously seems really light. I thought I'd see what other geometric furniture I could round up. Turns out, geometry has been an inspiration for all sorts of designs, including stools, armchairs, side chairs, dinner tables, and side tables. See my finds below!
The general loosening of cultural standards has allowed us to get lazy in every aspect of our lives including our postures as our shoulders hunch forward and our backs bulge back in unsightly humps. But if Spring 2009 fashions have anything to say about it we will be all shoulders square, eyes forward and shoulder blades pulled back. Serious geometric tailoring means equally serious posture and we say its about time!
Korean designer Lie Sang Bong could only ever show in Paris with his penchant for the curious and his admirable ability to bring together seemingly clashing aesthetics from plain white structured shirt dresses to loud geometric suits. And yet his Spring 2009 collection was all part of a continuum of precision even as the bright colors in linear procession filled the eye with wild possibilities. But the collection ever went over the edge into chaos. You can see a graceful formalism in his sheer bubble skirts and even his flowing evening gowns were restrained by orderly symmetry.
The geometry of life peculates through our the shared social consciousness. Golden ratios and fearful symmetries populate our art and literature so it is no small wonder that two of our community partners, Kingdom of Style and Style Bubble, both have posts heavy on geometric fashion. Style Bubble is looking after squares and Kingdom of Style is obsessing over Complex Geometries.
We feel like we should take this opportunity to point out that just a little bit of math makes fashion a lot better. Because in no other place but math do we find the relationship between truth and beauty to be as true or complex. Which given just how ugly a business fashion is, it is no surprise that we like to inject a little beauty via the truth. Isn't the golden ration pleasing to look at even in equation form?
