CFDA Awards to Be Broadcast For the Very First Time (Updated)

On June 5, the CFDA Awards will be broadcast online, allowing a global audience unprecedented access to the ceremony for the first time in history.

On June 5, the CFDA Awards will be broadcast online, allowing a global audience unprecedented access to the ceremony for the first time in history.

The stream will air at noon EDT on Style.com's homepage and on a special section of the site dedicated to the CFDA, which celebrates is 50th anniversary this year. Everything from arrivals on the red carpet — where Tim Blanks will interview some of the industry's biggest names as they walk into the awards show — to designers' acceptance speeches will be shown in the broadcast. The awards ceremony itself will be held in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on June 4.

Style.com's special CFDA page launched on Thursday, featuring interviews with this year's honorees and a slideshow of photos from the past 30 years of CFDA Awards, which started in 1981.

"From the beginning, it has been the mission of Style.com to use technology to bring our global, fashion obsessed audience behind the closed doors of fashion," said the site's editor in chief Dirk Standen. "This 50th anniversary show gives us an opportunity to do just that while allowing us to celebrate and give broader exposure to the incredible work of American designers."

Update: The award show will not be broadcast until 5 pm, but the red carpet highlight reel is online and available for viewers.

InstaGlam: Our Favorite Snaps From the 2012 CFDA Awards

Fashion's biggest night has come and gone — but not without plenty of glamour and charm.

Fashion's biggest night has come and gone — but not without plenty of glamour and charm. And why not? After all, it's not every day that the industry meets up to reflect and celebrate. "It's like a reunion," Zac Posen explained. "The community works together."

"I'm excited about five decades of American fashion," CFDA chief Steven Kolb explained as he strolled the red carpet. "It's our 50th anniversary so we did a really cool retrospective, with designers from the '60s, like Donald Brooks, all the way up through the zeros to now. Its going to be really good. That's what I'm most excited about."

"I'm really excited about the fact that so many wonderful people have been nominated, and also that the whole design community comes together," fashion patron and style icon Michelle Harper agreed. "Diane von Furstenberg is an incredible leader, Steven Kolb is fantastic. And just all the efforts that they do to support designers — it's amazing."

Tommy Hilfiger, who was to be honored with the prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, was also in high spirits. "I think, 'Is this really happening?' Then I think about the fact that I've been doing this for a long time, but also, I think, I'm too young to get this award," the iconic designer laughed.

See our snapshots and read more from the industry's biggest players and supporters — including Diane von Furstenberg, Doutzen Kroes, Jessica Chastain, and more — here, in the slideshow.

Comme des Garcons's Rei Kawakubo Wins CFDA Award 2012

Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo will be honored with the International award at this Monday's CFDA Awards, and already the industry is getting a head start on celebrating.

Earlier this week, Style.com published a tribute in which notable fashionables — including Taylor Tomasi Hill, Shane Gabier, and Chris Peters — discuss their love for the avant-garde label. Then on Wednesday, Cathy Horyn offered her perspective on Kawakubo's 40-plus-year career. "No living designer, with the exception of Azzedine Alaïa, is held in higher esteem by her peers, and none has enriched our spirit in so many original and confounding ways," Horyn wrote. In an attempt to shed light on Kawakubo's creative process, Horyn also reprinted an email from the designer, an excerpt of which is below:

"My design process never starts or finishes. I am always hoping to find something through the mere act of living my daily life. I do not work from a desk, and do not have an exact starting point for any collection. There is never a mood board, I do not go through fabric swatches, I do not sketch, there is no eureka moment, there is no end to the search for something new. As I live my normal life, I hope to find something that click starts a thought, and then something totally unrelated would arise, and then maybe a third unconnected element would come from nowhere. Often in each collection, there are three or so seeds of things that come together accidentally to form what appears to everyone else as a final product, but for me it is never ending. There is never a moment when I think, 'this is working, this is clear.' If for one second I think something is finished, the next thing would be impossible to do."

Kawakubo will not be in New York to accept her award Monday, but she has asked her longtime friend filmmaker John Waters to present and accept the award on her behalf. In the slideshow, a look back at some of our favorite looks from recent Comme des Garcons collections.

Simon Spurr Suspends PR Operations After Designer's Exit

>> Anyone requesting samples from Simon Spurr is out of luck — the company has stopped loaning out clothing, and halted its public relations activities, in the wake of Spurr's departure.

Sarvie Nasseri, who handles public relations for the men's clothing company, told WWD in an email that “at this time all p.r. is on hold." The hold is only temporary, but until it's lifted, Spurr won't be lending clothing to magazines or celebrities who want to wear them for red carpet appearances.

Spurr left his company last Friday – two days after being nominated for for the CFDA Award for menswear. To date, neither he nor the executives who are still at the company have commented on his departure, but it's understood that cofounder Judd Nyles wants to keep the line open without Spurr.

Simon Spurr Still Eligible For CFDA Award Despite Leaving Own Brand

>> Simon Spurr's unexpected departure from his eponymous clothing label hasn't disqualified him from winning this year's CFDA Award for menswear, but it might make it slightly more difficult for him to take it home.

CFDA executive director Steven Kolb told WWD that "it’s the individual, not the company, that is nominated," which means Spurr could still beat out fellow nominees Billy Reid and Patrik Ervell. Spurr left his post as creative director of his company without explanation on Saturday, just two days after being nominated for the award. Kolb noted that Spurr's exit might change the way voters see Spurr, adding that he hopes they "vote on that body of work."

Simon Spurr executives Judd Nyes — who started the company in 2006 — and CFO Jenny Villareal had no comment on the matter, but it's understood that they want to keep the company's doors open without Spurr.

Well, there's Carolina Herrera, Johan Lindeberg, Narciso Rodriguez, Rachel Roy, Rebecca Minkoff, Peter Som, Phillip Lim, Diane von Furstenberg, Pamela Love, Stefano Tonchi, Virginia Smith, Garance Doré, and Scott Schuman — just to name a few. There's also lots of head-nodding, air-kissing, champagne-drinking, and general good times being had all around.
