This designer/contractor-owned home, which was featured in This Old House, was blemished with a small, dated kitchen that was closed off except for a doorway and a counter window. It also lacked good counter space. The owners decided to knock down the dividing wall, update the amenities with simple, streamlined selections, and infuse the space with bright color. The resulting space is open, vibrant, and modern — and a far cry from its icky roots. To see the kitchen after its renovation, read more

I'm a huge fan of eco-minded furniture design shop The Joinery, which is located in Portland, OR. The Joinery handcrafts high-end furniture using traditional woodworking techniques in a variety of styles, including modern, shaker, mission, and arts and crafts styles, as well as custom pieces.
Taking a cue from the needs of its customers, who are often downsizing to smaller urban spaces, The Joinery has recently developed its Modern line.
Etsy seller Spruce Home, a design studio based in Austin, TX, has upholstered this ornate, wooden-based ottoman in Amy Butler's Nigella Primrose fabric, giving it a vibrant, modern update. The Ottoman Empire ($425) stands 14 inches high with a 30-inch diameter, the perfect size to use as a round coffee table, or set with a tray or some shelter books on top. Not only do I adore the aqua and cool green fabric used, but it looks like it'd be super comfortable used as a stool, foot rest, or even a dog bed! If this ottoman isn't for you, Spruce has a handful of other beautifully upholstered pieces available in their shop. Need a cane back chair? A striped sofa? A set of modular Herman Miller chairs?
