If these pillows look familiar, it may be because you spotted the same fabric on my Park(ing) Day tent. The graphic black and white upholstery fabric from Ikea was perfect for making some small pillows for my sofa. I whipped up these two pillows in less than half an hour from start to finish.
Wondering why these pillows were so quick and easy to make? Find out when you read more
In the past, my Home Away From Home posts have highlighted designer boutique hotels, crave worthy modern resorts, and the like. But, New York's Guggenheim Museum has gone and played a round of Boggle with the meaning of the word hotel. As part of an exhibition called theanyspacewhatever, the landmark museum will host guests in its "Revolving Hotel Room," a work of art created by Belgian artist Carsten Höller. To hear more about the "hotel," read more
Lou Dixon, owner and designer of Bio-Friendly Gardens, recently gave me a tour of one of his client's home gardens. The owner, a chef and horticulturalist, loves tropical foliage. Her garden features a delightful mix of tropical plants, succulents, more traditional flowers, and lush trees. What's even more impressive is that her garden stands up to life with two large dogs. Take a tour of her lush space.
There's something very old Hollywood glam about this "Chinchilla" Chair ($1,229), which is upholstered in fake fur. I love its low, slung-back profile, but I'm not so sure about the fake fur. I'd be even less sure about genuine fur, of course, but even the fake kind concerns me a little. What about you?
Three men (Preston, Eddie, and Nathan) and two women (Ondine and Andrea) remain on Top Design. Right off the bat, we are treated to more homesickness from Andrea (in case you forgot, which it is literally impossible to do if you watch the show regularly, she's Ricky Schroder's wife). As the episode begins, Andrea receives flowers and a love poem from her hubz, which she says makes her even more homesick. Many of you have been anti-Andrea, but I was actually starting to warm up to her. However, this display of adorableness has made me change my mind yet again. (And was it just me, or did Ondine seem a little sarcastic when she said she was thrilled to have met her?)
But on to the design challenge! Things started with a switcheroo, as the designers were asked to complete a pop design challenge before moving on to the main challenge. Using Jonathan Adler accessories, the designers styled the same sets of beige sofas. Eddie won immunity for the challenge (I did love his fern and floral table arrangement). Still, he continues to be a cheeky and, dare I say, rude, dude.
If you watch Mad Men, you know that Roger Sterling loves to cheat on his wife. In a recent episode of Mad Men, he and his 20-something lover (and now fiancée!) Jane lounged in a hotel room whose color palette caught my eye. While I'm not a fan of infidelity, I do love the chestnuts, cool silvery greens, and ivory of this room. Inspired, I decided to look for other home furnishings and accessories that featured these colors.
InStyle currently has a great feature on celebrity interior designer Kari Whitman and her eco-friendly ideas for Jessica Alba's home. Whitman is known for her creative use of salvaged artifacts (like the vintage chandeliers shown here) that she finds by scouring antique shops, flea markets, and her clients' homes. For example, she says, "For Jessica Alba's house we bought almost every piece used." Snatching up second-hand pieces isn't the only way she has greenified Alba's home, though.
