As part of our Best of 2008 polls, you named Target as your favorite home décor chain store this year. It's no wonder: this year the Bullseye introduced some fabulous designer pieces by DwellStudio, Cynthia Rowley, Sami Hayek, Graham & Brown, and John Derian, and as always, charmed us with affordable prices. I must agree to disagree with you on this one, though. This year, I fell hard for CB2, which, perhaps not coincidentally, opened a new store in my 'hood (San Francisco). Source and Source
One of my friends presented me with two forced paper white narcissus bulbs a few weeks ago. The bulbs had barely started to sprout, but they'd sunk down roots into the watery pebbles in their container. Then, a few days before our annual holiday party, the bulbs had a growth spurt, and sprouted delicate, white flowers for the party. What perfect timing! Unfortunately, some of the other bulbs that I'm forcing look like they're going to bloom right around Christmas — when I'm in Wisconsin visiting my extended family.
Have you forced any bulbs this holiday season? Have you made it a tradition to do so? If not, what holiday flowers do you decorate with? Do you have favorites, or do you range all over the floral map?
If you're running out of time and scrambling for gift ideas, I maintain that a pretty gift basket always comes through in a pinch. Today, I've rounded up two different baskets from World Market. These items should give you a good starting point for your own finds, and give you an idea of the items available from World Market with which you can assemble a pretty gift basket. World Market is a great choice for this type of gift, since it carries a wide variety of low-priced, pretty home accents perfect for gift baskets.
For my first gift basket, I pulled together pamper-worthy bath furnishings and accessories. From pretty glass-knobbed hooks for your friend's silk robe to eco-friendly drawer liners, the lucky recipient of this gift basket will definitely get a powder room upgrade. Assemble all of your finds in a pretty wastebasket or storage basket, stick a bow on it, and you're set.
Vanity Fair recently asked a few prominent interior designers how they'd redecorate the Oval Office, given the opportunity. One of them responded by saying:
For me, redesigning the White House would be a job of a lifetime . . . I suggest throwing off the symmetry with De Sede’s 1960s Non-Stop sofa, along with a set of violet Jacobsen Egg chairs, the Brass Kaleidoscope I designed for Bergdorf Goodman, and my Tracery Rug for the Rug Company. I would also include a heavy and modern desk with a chartreuse empire chair and a modern screen.
Yesterday, I told you that 2009's color of the year is Mimosa. I love the saturated, yolky hue of Mimosa, and think it would create a bright spot of sunshine in any room. I'm particularly excited about easily adding Mimosa to my home with this Ferm Living Kitchen Towel ($19) from 2Modern.To get you excited about this sunny new hue, I thought I'd round up some other optimistically hued goods in this color.
Su Casa member Citygal, who has been preparing for her holiday party, brought a little festivity to her Manhattan studio by fashioning a two-dimensional Christmas tree on her wall out of tinsel and tree lights, inspired by a similar 2-D tree that she saw in this month's Domino. She picked up the tinsel garland (which has little candy canes on it!) at the dollar store, so it's quite the inexpensive, but still fabulous, decoration. Citygal also decked out her house by turning on a snowflake screen saver on her Apple TV. Quite the cheerful holiday home! Have you posted holiday decorating photos to Su Casa? In case you forgot, this month I'd like you to share photos of your own holiday decorating with the rest of us in the Su Casa Group. You have all month to get your photos in, and feel free to add a caption, talking about how you achieved your festive look, where your accents are from, or what your holiday traditions are when it comes to decking the halls! Two lucky participants will win the CasaSugar swag of their choice, so it's definitely worth taking a snapshot or two of your home! I'm looking forward to seeing all of your inspired decor!
This year, like all the rest, was flooded with fabulous furniture pieces to covet and sometimes fill my home. From my all-time favorite, the Philippe Starck Louis Ghost Chair, which never ceases to wow me with its transparent and modern take on a classic, to vividly hand-painted cabinets and industrial carts turned coffee tables, furniture came first in my book. To see nine other pieces I love, check out the slideshow.
