Before and After: Taming Winter Gear Without Spending a Penny

Amanda Soule, the author, crafter, and mama behind SouleMama, recently shared a no-cost fix she made to her home's entry space.

Amanda Soule, the author, crafter, and mama behind SouleMama, recently shared a no-cost fix she made to her home's entry space. With four kids in a Maine farmhouse that's mid-renovation, Amanda initially asked her kids and husband to take off Winter layers and boots in the barn, which they enter before heading into the kitchen.

This solution, Amanda notes, worked great until it started to get really cold out. She writes, "I found myself staring in the face of a shivering toddler, telling him that he needed to take his boots and jacket off in the barn (where it was as cold as outside) and then come inside. I realized just how ridiculous I sounded as I heard the words coming out of my mouth. And? I didn't want to do it myself, either."

Not wanting her kitchen entry area to look like this photo all Winter long, Amanda challenged herself to come up with a solution to the piles of coats and boots that littered her entry.

See how Amanda created a cozy and organized corner without spending a cent!

10 Ideas For Decorating an Entry Table

I worked hard (well, sort of) to get my foyer in order this past weekend.

I worked hard (well, sort of) to get my foyer in order this past weekend. I moved some hanging plates around and got a new throw pillow for my new purple chair, but I'm kind of stumped on how to decorate my console table. I have a few things that look great — a ginger jar and a candelabra — but the arrangement is just missing something. So I decided to cull a few images from some of my favorite shelter magazines as inspiration. I have a few ideas for myself now, but I thought some of you might be in the same boat, so here are 10 ideas for decorating an entry table.

Give Your Entry a Fall Glow

Painting always seems like a major commitment, but in a smaller room, such as an entryway, it can be a minor undertaking that won't eat up an entire day or weekend.

Painting always seems like a major commitment, but in a smaller room, such as an entryway, it can be a minor undertaking that won't eat up an entire day or weekend. Choosing the first room that guests usually see also makes a huge visual impact. So, if you've been tempted to paint a room in your house with a warm color, take a cue from interior designer Birch Coffey, who painted this small entry in Benjamin Moore’s Navajo Red 2171-10. The rich color gives this space a warm glow, and is certain to offer visitors a welcome view on their visit to this home. Why not try it in yours?

9 Tips For Transitioning Your Entry Into Autumn

Every season requires distinctly different needs from your entryway.

Every season requires distinctly different needs from your entryway. Since this is usually the first room that guests also see, it's important to keep the space not only organized, but attractive as well. Check out these tips for transitioning this room from Summer to Autumn.

  • Stow away any Summer sandals, beach towels, or outdoor supplies that may be lingering in your entry using sturdy storage containers. Stash the containers in your garage, attic, or closet.
  • Add a boot tray to your entry. This way, you'll be prepared for muddy Fall weather before it strikes.
  • Take heavier jackets out of storage. Either hang in an entry closet or install additional closet hooks to accommodate them.
  • Consider adding storage baskets for hats, scarves, and gloves.
  • An umbrella stand is a logical choice for rainier climates and will help to prevent wetness on floors.
  • Invest in a pretty indoor-outdoor rug. They're relatively inexpensive and can be easily cleaned.
  • A warm paint color will renew your entryway and also lend coziness to your home. Try a rich yellow or mellow orange.
  • Prepare for cooler temperatures by DIYing a draft blocker for your entryway's windows and door.
  • Add a bouquet of Autumn blooms to an entry table.

Cool Idea: Uma's Curtained Off Foyer

Her long legs, adorable children, and fruitful career are all reasons to envy Uma Thurman.

Her long legs, adorable children, and fruitful career are all reasons to envy Uma Thurman. But what's coloring me green with envy are her recently listed Greenwich Village digs.
While I can't dole out the whopping $14.2 million to get the NYC home, I can take note of a few of her décor tricks. The one that catches my eyes most is her use of drapes to section off her foyer from her living area. I quite like the idea of being able to seal off the room completely without the use of doors. The voluminous curtains and tiebacks breathe romantic style and elegance into a tranquil setting. Now if only I could just live there . . .

Do You Have an Entry Staircase?

I grew up in two different Colonial homes, which each had a staircase leading up from the foyer.

I grew up in two different Colonial homes, which each had a staircase leading up from the foyer. It didn't occur to me until I had grown up a bit that not all homes have this feature greeting guests as they enter. For a while, I just thought that's how all homes were built! I love how welcoming the architectural element is, and it allows for fun decorating with statement-making chandeliers! The next time I'm househunting, it'll definitely be on my wish list, but I know that one staircase does not a great house make; of course, I'll have other priorities. Do you have a staircase in your foyer?

It doesn't have to be expensive. Some simple containers from Ikea will suffice. Pair them with some boot trays and mats, and you'll be a little more organized when it comes to your family's boot collection. Another idea? Add a stool to your entryway for easy on and off with those bulky boots!

Do You Have a Foyer Console Table?

A console table in your foyer can make a great landing strip for your keys, purse, and other daily essentials.

A console table in your foyer can make a great landing strip for your keys, purse, and other daily essentials. But it can also just be pretty and fill an otherwise dead space. I love this foyer by interior designer Anne Coyle. Orchids, check. Cherry blossoms, check. Ornate mirror, check. White furniture, check. Soft lighting, check!
