White Lacquer and High-Gloss Furniture and Decor

Do You Still Love White Lacquer Décor?

I was reading some commentary recently about the state of design, and someone brought up a good question: what legacy will our generation leave behind? When I thought back about design in the last few years, one trend came to mind: white lacquer furniture and décor. It has become so pervasive that it's almost a staple. "Spray paint it with a coat of high gloss paint," seems to be a go-to tip from interior designers and design writers alike, and retailers from the affordable CB2 and Ikea to the high-end Horchow and Jonathan Adler are pushing the stuff.

To go the spray-paint route, you've most likely got to begin with a piece of wood furniture that was much prettier in its original wood-stained state. If you shop for this style in the stores, you'll encounter melamine and particleboard topped with white veneer, powder-coated metal, and cheap plastic designs. Is that the legacy we are leaving behind? Furniture that's not hand-crafted but either carelessly DIY-ed or cheaply made? The thought makes me sad, but to be honest, I still do really love this look. Do you still love the look of white lacquer?
