What's Off Limits at Your Casa?

I like to think that I run a mellow and welcoming household. That said, there are a few things that drive me absolutely nuts. Chief among these is friends' kids who jump on the sofa. While the kids always cease and desist after I politely tell them that jumping on furniture is verboten in our house, it's definitely something that always makes me cringe. Other friends won't allow glasses on a coffee table without a coaster, and still others won't let you get a foot into their home without slipping off your shoes. What's off limits at your casa?

I would never, ever, EVER allow smoking in my home. I even hate when the neighbors are smoking outside and it wafts into the windows. Worst habit and smell ever.

No smoking inside and I've tried to get the 'rents to follow a no shoes rule and it never works. :\ Shoes are so germy. And we hate when the cat jumps up on the refrigerator we have breakable everywhere and he loves to knock 'em over.

No smoking or shoes indoors. The kids have pretty much ruined the living room furniture, so when we replace it I may insist they sit on the floor. :evil:

It absolutely boggles my mind that guests would just wander around wherever they feel like it in the private areas of one's home. Frankly, though, if I'm entertaining, I'm, you know, entertaining, and I'm with whoever is over... Anyway, the only rule in our house is no smoking-- what a foul habit, and the smell lingers horribly. Though I always take my shoes off when entering the house, I'd never ask my guests to, and our sidetables and sideboards are slate topped, so the coaster thing isn't an issue.

Our couches are non-bouncy so that's not really an issue. We don't even have springy beds anymore. And there are no kids. We regularly flaunt most of the other rules. No wet or dirty shoes in the house but we're not super careful if they're dry. The dogs have the run of the place (except my bed). The coffee table has a tile top -- we own only one coaster and it's on my desk. Absolutely no smoking allowed though.

My mom quit smoking last year, so no smoking is starting to become a rule in my house. We follow the rule, "If you don't use 'please' and 'thank you,' you aren't getting what you request." My parents are sticklers with manners. Being rude is not tolerated in my house. We are pretty open about other things like swearing, shoes and other things, but being rude is not acceptable.The other big taboo in my house is drifting around the house like the house is an excavation site. I was taught from the time I was born that if I am at a person's house, I will not go wondering around giving myself a free tour. It bugs me to death when guests go around my house opening doors, poking around the bedrooms, not minding their own business by opening books, journals, dessers, etcetera and not asking for a tour or the rules of the house! My house is not a playground or excavation site. We always will show you where you will be staying (if you're sleeping over), where it acceptable to roam, where the bathrooms are and where food and beverages are.

Wow, i guess i'm pretty laid-back at my casa...my only rule is no smoking in the house but right outside on the balcony and decks is fine. I have a problem asking people to take their shoes off, I just think it's inappropriate because they are usually a major part of a woman's outfit and honestly most guys' feet smell pretty rank. I much rather spend a little extra time cleaning my carpet and wood floors than make my guests feel uncomfortable.

i didn't have the no shoes rule until we owned our place and at the same time bought a light colored area rug. but generally, why wear your shoes inside?

No smoking of course, but the sofa jumping. This is an every day all day battle between me and my 2 year old. And she has no fear of anything. Time-out doesn't bother her and the occassional tap on the butt, nothing. I ban her from the sofa she thinks its hilarious and is back on there jumping two minutes later. I can't stand it! Also, my BF and brothers/friends seem to think it's OK to move my furniture? And the thing is, they know I'm a completely anal about it all. So when the move something and I get upset they look at me like I'm completely out of my mind. I'm convinced they do it sometimes just to mess with me. I've actually threatened to glue them to the floor. Although that would also drive me nuts. I have to clean under my sofa like every 2-3 weeks.

i dont see how people can wear shoes in the house. it would get soo dirty:|! so i picked that one, but my friends dont generally come over and jump on the couch so some are just.. implied rules i guess.

No smoking in the house. That's about it. Although it did bother me when my neice ate a fudgesicle in 96 degree weather on my coach the other day. I was so paranoid but thought i would be sounding really b*tchy if i told her to go into the kitchen.

There is really nothing off limits at my house but smoking. I have a 1yr old so anyone that wants to smoke has to do it outside. Period.

I find the "no shoes in my house" rule a tad rude to guests. I'm happy for you if you have expensive rugs or hardwoods, but um, it's the floor. I would never stomp around in someone's house in stilettos because it's rude, so please don't ask me to remove my shoes. Also, some people have issues with their feet! I had a roommate who was absolutely terrified upon entering a party where she spotted a pile of shoes in the foyer. She had bruised her big toe and was ultimately embarrassed at having to expose it to the entire party of people she knew professionally. I just find the rule unnecessary.

My number one is to take the shoes off! I rent an apt and it's bad enough my stepson gets it dirty, lol. Of course, no jumping on couch, no piles of stuff, and our bedroom is completely off limits to guests. Amazingly enough, our kitten doesn't like to scratch (she's an ankle biter hehe), so we let her on the furniture. She will NOT be allowed to go onto the kitchen counters. 8)
