What Michelle Obama Loves About Design

On Friday, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the 10th annual National Design Awards in DC, a ceremony hosted by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Museum to honor designers across various disciplines. Here's what she had to say about design:

What I love about design is the artistic and scientific complexity that also becomes useful. A laptop, a bridge, an outfit. A garden. All drawn from a thousand wells of inspiration and yet grounded in the basic principles of math or science.

Liberal arts schools are meant to give students a well-rounded education. As Michelle points out, math and science are crucial studies for industrial designers and designers of all types. I think you'll find this overlap applies to many professions. But yea, I see what you're saying...I don't use much calculus writing about interior design all day!

its this typical thinking that makes every college student take unnecessary classes, like a physical therapy major has to take 'college' chemistry, I mean where am I gonna use the knowledge of which base is stronger and what to do when acid rain happens, teach that to environmental science students not me. I hate the ridiculous college system. Sorry its off topic, but now I understand why we're being subject to these ridiculous math and science classes!
