Tip for Prolonging Life of Cut Flowers

Casa Quickie: Don't Leave Leaves in Vases

Fresh cut flowers from the garden are one of Spring's greatest pleasures, and there are a few simple steps to make cut flowers last longer, but one tip should be done before even placing the arrangement in the vessel. You've probably worked hard at keeping your buds alive outside, so keep them thriving inside by first cutting off all leaves that will sit below the water line in your vase. Any foliage that remains under the water could encourage bacterial growth, causing an early demise of your beautiful blossoms — and not to mention stinky murky water. I like to keep a few leaves above the water line to let the flower respire, but don't worry, removing a few won't harm your flower either.
