Made out of the fibers of the jute plant, burlap's rough texture makes it a rather humble fabric. It's also incredibly strong: difficult to rip and highly resistant to buckling under pressure, this weather-resistant fabric has many uses, from agricultural to decorative.
Currently, burlap's been making an appearance all over the home design world, and even though it's not a luxe fabric by any stretch of the imagination, burlap-upholstered furniture such as this Vintage Armchair ($1800) will cost you a pretty penny. Call it faux humility or recession-influenced upholstery if you will, but burlap is big.
