5 Smart Buys For Your Eco-Shopping List

Brooklyn-based company reMade will turn your old, sadly out-of-style leather jacket into a bespoke pouf (or bag or pillow). Just send your jacket in and reMade will ship you back your new conversation piece. Don't have an old jacket cluttering up your closet? reMade will also source the upcycled leather, so you can simply specify the color. Prices start at $275.

I'm a big believer in shopping as green as possible whenever you can. I'm not dogmatic about it, but I don't think there's any good excuse not to purchase something that's organic, fair trade, sustainable, or otherwise displaying some serious eco cred — with one condition. I'm not going to buy something that's poorly designed simply because it has an organic cotton slipcover or is giving a percentage of its profits to charity. If I'm going to take the time to buy something, I want to love that item's design. Otherwise, it's a waste of money and space in my home. Luckily, there are some majorly chic and green home items currently on the market. Check out some of my latest favorite buys for the home, all of which have some great green credentials.
