Sale Alert: Pier 1's Great Light Switch

Clearly, there is something major going on at Pier 1. Right now, the retailer's web site is all but empty, and I suspect it's about to unveil a drastic makeover of sorts. Meanwhile, it's hosting a sale on lamps, cleverly dubbed the Great Pier 1 Light Switch, through Sept. 9.

I haven't been paying much attention to Pier 1 lately, and apparently, it got much cooler while I wasn't looking. If these sassy lamps are any indication, I like the new direction the chain is going in. Most of the lamps featured in the Great Light Switch are also major bargains, but it looks like you can only buy them in stores. That won't stop me from getting my hands on the super-mod 24" Teal Drum Lamp for just $29!

I have noticed several store closings in the Metro Boston area. I love that they have stuff specifically for apartments, so guess I will have to drive a bit farther if online shopping is closed too.

Pier 1 has been trying to get cooler... but I still think something is missing. Namely a little something called Vision and Quality. And I think its dumb to close online portion of business, but what do I know?

They also said that the were taking down the online store because they try to offer a variety of unique items and it's hard for them to keep up an online inventory that way. I was usually able to find whatever I wanted online, but oh well. There is a store near my work so I can always take a long lunch. I am more disappointed in not being able to browse online to see if I wanted to go to the store but maybe they will put up some things at least to look at. What is the difference between catalog and online anyway in terms of keeping inventory?

I just like that Pier 1 offers student discounts to people with school IDs. Admittedly, I still use my ID, though I graduated over a year ago...

That's sad, fortunately for me I drive past the clearance pier one every day, I found these great croc wine holders there and they were five dollars a piece they're so awesome!

Yes, Pier 1 has gotten much cooler in the last 3-5 years, ever since they took on that designer from Queer Eye. Anyway, I think the shake-up is corporate. Pier 1 no longer runs its charge cards in-house (that's now Chase), and I was under the impression they were also shedding the online store.
