Photos of President Obama's newly redecorated Oval Office were released this week, giving us the first glimpse at the new White House décor since Los Angeles-based designer Michael Smith was selected as the decorator in chief. While the first family vacationed in Martha's Vineyard, Smith and his crew installed a new rug, carpet, couches, wallpaper, and more. While some, as the New York Times points out, are calling it "too brown, too dowdy, too ho hum," I think Smith made appropriate updates, maintaining a sense of history, whilst bringing it up to speed with contemporary styles.
