CasaSugar: What elements of The Big C inspired your design?
Hans Galutera: A deep study of Laura Linney’s character, Cathy, ultimately spawned our design for The Big C space at this year’s Showtime House. As visitors progress through this space, they are taken on Cathy’s inner journey, one that is anchored by for key “C” words: cognition, contemplation, confusion, and clarity.
CS: How did you translate your inspiration into the interiors?
HG: The Contemplation room, a place for Cathy to evaluate where she is going and where she has been, is a cozy sanctuary. The focal point is a sinuous hourglass form hewn from sheer drapery, recalling the iconic imagery of the show's teasers where Cathy is shown in an hourglass.
The Clarity room is a whimsical take on her living room from the show. The most captivating element is a couch swinging from the ceiling, which symbolizes Cathy’s need to rise above her situation, and make the rest of her life truly exceptional. In the corner of this space, Cathy’s closet depicts a hyper-real living wall with a 3D TV that depicts the healing and calming powers of nature, which symbolizes her decision to heal homeopathically.
