CasaSugar: What elements of Californication inspired your design?

Eric Chan: Specifically, we were inspired by lead character Hank Moody, a New Yorker turned Angeleno writer who wrestles with fame, commercial success, failure, and writer's block, and who enjoys elements of the dark side — drugs, alcohol, sex, cigarettes, money, and grappling with maintaining his artistic integrity.

CS: How did you translate your inspiration into the interiors?

EC: Interior components such as the mirrored surfaces and jarring shapes (found in the fabricated cabinets, seating, and desk) reflect urban landscapes and materials, while the Ribbon Lamps, and Foscarini Diesel pendant, and Karastan rug are functional contemporary pieces that resemble crinkled paper and typify what Hank might use. Plus, the windows look out into the raging and complex Manhattan skyline, an ever-present source of conflict and distraction for Hank.

In addition, the cover of Hank Moody's book, God Hates Us All, served as a key element to choosing the room's colors — yellow, black and gray — all provided by PANTONE Paints by Fine Paints of Europe.
