CasaSugar: How would you define the mission of the magazine?
Anh-Minh Le: It sounds rather simplistic, but for me, Anthology is essentially about sharing — a cool house, a great recipe, a fun destination. We want to inspire people with stories and images without being overly prescriptive, so you won't find anything about "how to steal the look" of a home. The goal of the magazine is not to promote a perfectly polished existence or point people to the latest trends, but rather to encourage self-discovery and individuality.
CS: I, for one, really appreciate the tactile experience of paper magazines. Tell me a little bit about your decision to make this a print and not online magazine.
AML: While I love how the Internet connects people and allows them to share things with each other, from day one Anthology was conceived as a print magazine. I'm plopped in front of a computer all day, so pulling out a book or magazine always feels like a bit of a respite. And for me, a magazine is as much about the ritual as it is the content. I read magazines when I travel, when I'm relaxing at home after work, when I'm at my favorite breakfast spot. Those are really positive associations — and I don't think that's a small thing. The video we created to announce Anthology, which is entitled "Print Is Not Dead," taps into this.
CS: Who do you see as your reading public?
AML: I think the Anthology reader loves learning and experiencing new things, which is why we've included culture and travel pieces. She's the hands-on type, which is why you'll find gardening, decorating, and cooking stories. Of course, she loves looking at inspiring interiors and discovering the story behind them. And she emphasizes substance as much as style.
CS: How would you describe the magazine's aesthetic and philosophy when it comes to home decor?
AML: In a word: authentic. We're not trucking in furniture and borrowing left and right from boutiques. Everything you see on the page pretty much represents the way the homeowner lives. As you look at the homes featured in the first issue, you'll see that there's diversity there; the homes each have their own personality and we didn’t want to mess with that.
