To Paint or Not to Paint?

Here's a poll from OnSugar blog Smorgasbord:

That is the question.

So we're finally getting around to doing the bedrooms. Right now they have an odd combination of cheap laminate and vinyl flooring, Seriously, each room has something different. Not wanting to spend too much money on the floors but still end up with something nice looking, we've decided to install pine floors. As I am not crazy about pine anything, we're thinking of painting them white. What do you think?

White bamboo... less up keep than painted floors.

i like white painted floors. you don't have to match every room though. you could also stain them darker to be bamboo coloured, oak, or espresso, whatever your taste

Our winters are long, dark and gloomy with the shortest day lasting only 6 hours. So in order to maximize light we want to keep our floors (and walls) as light as possible. So staining them darker isn't an option. Why pine? It's traditional flooring here so it's easy to get and fairly inexpensive. The reason I don't like it is because of the knots and that it tends to darken over time. I'm hoping dirt won't be too big of an issue as we don't wear shoes indoors. Whitewashing may be the answer. Whitewash the wood, it won't show dirt as much but won't leave it the natural pine finish you don't like.

Stencil a design over them in the color you were going to paint them...then if you dont like the end product or tire of it you can quickly paint over it.

I think white painted floors could be cool, and also a grey or black. But my idea was staining them- do you like that look?

I like that you want to paint the floors, I think its a cool idea..but not white. It just sounds like a dirt magnet.

i don't see why you shouldn't paint the floors if it's the look you want. however, i don't understand why you'd choose a wood you don't like!

I'm not voting because I'm undecided. I love the look of wood flooring painted white. But, I've always wondered about the durability. I know how easily my kids scratch and ding the walls. I really wonder how well the poor floor would hold up under their constant assault. So, I'm undecided.
