How to Take Risks With Paint and Not Regret It

Feb 28 2014 - 6:06am

If you've committed to revamping your home, then you have to get rid of those white walls. While safe, white walls have nothing on rooms painted in shades of red, blue, and even black. If you still don't believe us, here are six rooms to prove it! With just a few coats, you can make a huge design statement — no hefty budget needed. After all, you really have nothing to lose . . . it's just paint!

Black

Black is back, and this time on your walls. A 2014 design trend [3], expect to see moody walls everywhere. There's nothing to be afraid of — this color will not only allow light fabrics to pop, but will serve as the perfect backdrop for a collection of trendy metallic accents.

Blue

Like black, various shades of blue are trending for 2014 [6]. Once you settle on a shade, try painting the trim too (rather than leaving it white). This creates a space saturated with color that will not go unnoticed.

Yellow

This yellow is anything but mellow! Opting for a canary yellow rather then a softer shade can make a big design statement. This dining room went a step further by experimenting with colorblocking. . . . clearly, it worked.

Greens

Kelly green will never go out of style. Opting to paint a similar shade will favor both your classic and trendy pieces. Surprisingly, green paint has the versatility of a neutral; it can be paired with almost anything!

Plum

Consider plum a happy medium between an all-black or even red wall. While it's a rich choice, it still provides a welcoming softness — especially in a living room.

Red

Red is a color rarely seen in homes, but if done right, the payoff is great. If you dare, try vamping your media room with red walls or using an oxblood shade in your bedroom. Don't be afraid to commit — going all out will instantly create a cozy, sultry vibe.
