Open House: What Piece of Furniture Means the Most?

At my house, I like to trace my personal history through my furniture. There's the table that was made by a friend, the toy box my grandfather carved when I was a little girl, the chair I found on the side of my street after dinner with a friend. Everyone has some small or big piece of furniture in their home that holds a secret history. What's your favorite? Tell me by commenting below.

I have a stainless steel hutch and curio cabinet from the fifties. They are actually antique medical cabinets that I dug out of a dumpster at my old Navy base. So I got them for free. I have gotten them appraised and they are worth about 7000.00 put together. Good investment I'd say.

I recently splurged on a vintage Eames lounge chair and ottoman. It's from the 70's, made with black leather, and a Rosewood shell, which is no longer available today. As long as I can remember, I always hoped to be able to one day afford an Eames lounge chair, and I'm so happy to have it now. It makes me feel like a "grown up," and I worked very hard to earn the money to buy it. I'll have it forever!

The first piece of furniture I made is pretty dear to me. It's a shelving unit that still looks lovely and matches my decor.

my mom's old, large wooden hutch. she passed away last year, so it's nice to have such a big piece of furniture she loved so much for so long in my own home.

That's atough question for me to answer because I think I have a favorite piece in every rooom of our house. In the foyer it is the farm cabinet. I honestly think it was handmade from bits and pieces - it's so old and so unique. We had to cut it down to fit our space but there was no harm and no foul. In our bedroom it is the bedside lamp. I found it at a local thrift shop and I've never seen anything like it - before or since. In our master closet it is either the custom cabinetry that my husband built or the shade that I engineered from a print of my work. In the guest room it is the library card catalog. You have yet to see it because the room is not done. In our living room it is a tough call. I spent a lot of time finding and then acquiring each piece. My husband crafted the 4 foot square ottoman from scratch - so maybe I should choose that. I don't know. It would run a close second to my sputnik lamp.

Oooh. I love this one. I have a sofa designed and custom built by one of my dearest friends. It is gorgeous. It is currently undergoing a much needed reupholstering by my husband which will make that much more special. I also have a gorgeous painting, which maybe doesn't count as furniture but is so large that it should, done by a girlfriend and given to us as a wedding gift. In combo with the sofa it is my favorite scene in the house. I also love my Celerie Kemble Serpentine dresser bought at the design center open to the public day because it wasn't on sale but I talked the showroom manager into 50% off because I am a very clever girl. :)

i have a desk that my grandmother used in her bedroom as a young woman...i have a mirror that was given to my mom when she was a little girl and i have a lovely jewelry box that my husband made for me when we were dating

I have a dining room set that my grandparents bought right after their wedding in 1950! My parents had it at their house for a couple years, but when they downsized it came straight to my house! My mom re-covered the chairs when she had it. It's not the most pretty piece of furniture I have but I love that it's still in in the family and in use almost 60 years later! I'm sure when they bought it they never thought about that!!

My mom's 1962 piano. It's not the most expensive one but my grandfather gave it to her when she was 8 and I recently inherited it. I love it so much!

I have a dining room table and chairs that my grandparents bought in Halifax when my dad was young and carried around Canada with them as they moved. It was given to my parents when I was young to help them furnish their first home. My parents replaced it a few years ago, and it moved to Montreal with me. I re-covered the chairs with the former dining room curtains (luckly, the exact navy blue of my colour scheme!), so it's like having a bit of my childhood home in my own place.
