Open House: New Year's Resolutions For Your Home

In her book Speed Decorating, professional stager Jill Vegas recommended making a house rule not to leave shoes laying around. This guideline in particular would never fly in my pad — although it makes sense for people showing their home to potential buyers — but it got me thinking about what resolutions I want to make around my home this year.

One thing I always return to is being better about turning the lights out when I leave the room. I also always struggle with getting my laundry done before it's crunch time. How about you? What resolutions do you have for your household in 2010? Tell me by commenting below!

I've lived there 9 years and still haven't decorated upstairs. Done lots of stuff downstairs, but upstairs, not so much. Still plain white walls with nothing on them. I know it'd feel more like a home if I did something. Also, I have living room furniture but no real bedroom furniture. Time to stop ignoring my upstairs!

I made a list the other night. I'm hoping to stick with it. I too want to clean out my garage. It hasn't been a month yet but if it sits any longer it wont get done, I know it. Another is to stay on top. Whether its the cleaning, the bills, the maintenance, I want to stay on top of it all. I think that will help me to have a better home in general.

clean out our old chicken coop in the back (it is always overloaded with weed trees!) and plant a vegetable garden in it...i need to get on it!

Finally unpacking all the rest of the boxes we have in the garage and office since we moved in. It will be two years in March. I just gotta do it.

My major goal for this year is to be ruthless about purging the house of excess. From furniture to dishes to linens I am hoping to rid the house of at least 50%.
