Murphy Bed

Definition: Murphy Bed

Ideal for living in small spaces, a Murphy bed is an otherwise normal-sized bed that folds up into an alcove, an armoire, or a closet for storage. The mattress is attached to the bed frame — often with a strap or bolts — and does not use a box spring. It usually folds up at the head of the bed to be concealed by a pair of doors.

Often, you'll find Murphy beds built into studio apartments or other small rooms, and you can also buy wall beds to install in your home. Murphy beds are named for William L. Murphy, who held the first patent on the design in 1916.

Anonymous, your concern is valid, some Murphy units have springs and metal bars that can be very noisy. I built a Murphy unit that uses pistons for the lift mechanish and framing is all wood construction. I do not have the problem that you have expressed concern about.

A question, of some sensitivity perhaps, for Murphy Bed owners: what about sex on such a bed? Could the bed possibly be a stable as an ordinary one? Wouldn't all that machinery make things a wee bit noisy -- a serious consideration when in a small condo without thick walls? M

Can anybody reccomend a brand or where to go to get a Murphy bed? Thinking that would work in my 2nd bedroom.

How funny, askmetostay, but I've always felt the same way about Murphy beds. I think this is a great idea for utilizing small space needed for multiple functions. I would love to have one!
