Modern Green Design: The Glidehouse

When most of us hear the term "prefab," we think of doublewide trailers. Yet it is possible for a prefab house to be beautifully designed—and environmentally responsible. Take the Glidehouse. Built in a factory using modern and environmentally friendly building methods and materials, this house can be built in as little as 10 to 14 months at a cost comparable to or below traditional site-built homes (averaging $250/square foot).

Designed by Michelle Kaufmann, Glidehouse is nationally recognized as a contemporary, sustainable residence, setting the standard for pre-fabricated architecture.

The Glidehouse meets the Energy Star program standards for energy efficient homes and meets the performance standards of the American Lung Association Health House program. This high-performance home is highly insulated, uses water-saving plumbing fixtures, and is very energy-efficient. The Glidehouse uses healthy finishes such as non-toxic paints and formaldehyde-free cabinetry. Each Glidehouse home is solar ready, meaning that the Glidehouse professionals will work with homeowners to install solar panels after the home is delivered.
