Mediterranean Style Home in Berkeley For Sale

On the Market: A Magnificent Mediterranean in the Berkeley Hills

Confession: I've been eager to see the interior of this house for a couple years. I live a few blocks away, and from the street, the property is fantastically landscaped with hundreds of succulents. Playing the part of the nosy neighbor, I often peer over the fence a bit to see if I can sneak a peek. My curiosity is partially explained by the house's and lot's size; it's definitely one of the more opulent houses in my neighborhood.

So I was thrilled to see that it was for sale when I walked by recently, and that there was a well-documented set of photos on the realtor's website. It turns out that the succulents, as well as other exotic plants such as palms, cacti, and birds of paradise, are courtesy of garden designer Brandon Tyson. The property's exterior beauty doesn't end there: the grounds feature a beautiful custom fountain, tile work and sculptures by local artists, as well as an edible garden full of vegetables, herbs, and exotic fruit trees including pomegranates and Buddha's Hand. The rear garden also has a hut tub tucked away in a secluded corner.

The Mediterranean estate, built in 1931, features arches, ornamental iron, woodwork, and warm colors throughout. The open floor plan is perfect for family life, and the 4+ bedrooms and 3+ baths will ensure there's room for every member of the family. The home chef can enjoy a gourmet kitchen with Wolf, Sub-Zero, and Miele appliances, original tilework, and a formal breakfast nook. I'm in love with the library, whose custom ceiling (shown here) was created with Bradbury & Bradbury art wallpaper. The oenophile will appreciate a custom mahogany wood wine cellar that can hold over 1500 bottles of wine.

What will all this cost you? A cool $2.75 million. While I can only dream about owning a home this grand, it's definitely fun to take a look around, which you can do below. My curiosity? Satisfied.
