Four Mad Men-Inspired Office Accents That Deserve a Comeback

To say that I've been eagerly anticipating the return of Mad Men is a bit of an understatement. I've been anxious to see how season five would deal with the many unresolved story lines from the season four finale. What will happen to SCDP? Will Joan 'fess up about the father of her baby? Will Peggy ever get any recognition?

Today, I'm teasing you a bit with a photo from season five's first episode, "A Little Kiss," which airs on Sunday night on AMC. In this scene, Pete Campbell addresses Stan Rizzo, Peggy Olson, and Ken Cosgrove — perhaps in an effort to drum up more business for the firm. While checking out the photo, I was struck by three items in the office that may deserve a comeback.

Curious as to what those items are? Keep reading to see the four items from Mad Men that every office may need in 2012

  • Artwork While Pete's choice of wall art may not be your favorite, you have to respect the fact that he even cares enough to hang artwork. To give it a 21st century twist, look for contemporary, under-the-radar artists whose works are both compelling and affordable. Shop art fairs, Etsy, and newer galleries to find something you love. Then hang it on your office wall or prop it on your desk. Having something beautiful to look at will inspire you to make that extra effort to land a big account or write perfect ad copy.
  • A Place to Crash Let's face it: many of us practically live at our offices. If we're spending morning, noon, and night there, we might as well have the perfect spot to power nap as well. While this Jens Risom Love Seat ($4,700) may be a little dated come 1966 to '67, the years season five is most likely set, it's a classic midcentury modern design that still looks sleek and gorgeous today.
  • A Well-Stocked Bar (Even if It's Only Nonalcoholic) Depending on your particular office's policy, your fridge at work may or may not be well stocked with beer and wine. In either case, I'm in love with Pete's handsome wooden bar cart. And even if alcohol at the office is strictly verboten, it's always a good idea to have a selection of your favorite beverages on hand to get you through tough stretches. And if you can display those beverage selections on a charming midcentury modern wooden bar cart? All the better.
  • A Task Lamp That Doesn't Scream Task Lamp Forget mass-ordered metal or plastic task lamps. To make your office space special, invest in a lamp that makes your space look beautiful — and helps you to finish your work without causing undue eyestrain. For a lamp similar to Pete's, try the Christian Dell Table Lamp.
