Lithograph Artwork by Sister Mary Corita Kent

Clowning Around With Corita Kent

Thanks to my beautiful new throw, my living room decor now has the glam/comfy/casual thing down. But the place where it's seriously lacking is the walls. In one of my favorite interior design boutiques in San Francisco, FL!PP, I hit the jackpot.

A bright orange lithograph tucked behind a sofa caught the corner of my eye. It featured a clown motif and an up-close read: "His personal life was so full of grief and private torment as a clown's is always said to be." Hilarious! Then, I discovered a matching print featuring a zany circus motif in hot pink with an equally witty quote. Turns out the original lithos were designed by Sister Corita Kent, a well-known artist of the '60s and '70s who studied with Andy Warhol.

To my surprise, the shopkeeper was willing to give me a great bargain on them! I took both home for only $120. The lithographs were already framed and matted in white, a color I can't get enough of. The framing alone would have cost me as much, and a quick eBay scan tells me her work sells for hundreds. So let's just say that I feel like a pretty lucky girl. Plus, I love the way they pop against my peacock-colored walls!
