7 Lessons From a Fashion Designer's Closet Every Girl Can Use

Even beloved fashion designers occasionally need a little help when it comes to organizing their closet. So when fashion guru Rebecca Minkoff wanted to transform her cluttered, self-described "mess" of a closet into a chic and organized space, she called on the design pros at virtual interior design service Laurel & Wolf. The makeover is nothing short of inspiring, and lucky for us it's full of design lessons every girl can use to beautify her own closet. Browse through the slideshow to learn the seven steps to a magazine-worthy closet.

Individualize the Layout and Design

Rebecca and her Laurel & Wolf designer evaluated her physical space (a walk-in closet), her storage needs (must accommodate lots of shoes), and her personal style (edgy glam), so they had the basic closet design finalized before digging into the mess. While a custom closet sounds expensive, it can be done easily and affordably using a highly adaptable storage solution like Elfa's customizable Utility Door and Wall Rack.

Install a Statement Lighting Fixture

Overhead lighting is essential for seeing what's in the closet, and it can also serve as a great design element, setting a strong design tone for the space. Laurel & Wolf found this retro glam sunburst pendant for Rebecca. It gives the closet a strong vibe and makes the room a fun place to be.

Incorporate Stylish Design Elements

Consider the closet a room in your house, and as such, give it the design attention it deserves. Even in a small closet, wall and floor surfaces are great places to infuse personality. Rebecca added some of her signature style with a faux marble wallpaper and warm Persian-style rug.

Artfully Display Large Accessories

Artfully Display Large Accessories

Consider your clothes and accessories part of the closet's interior design and show off their beauty by displaying them with style. Curate items like chunky necklaces, leather bags, and colorful sweaters into vignettes throughout the closet. Rebecca hung her beautiful jewelry on stands and displayed her handbags on open shelves so they are both organized and beautiful to look at.

Keep Everything You Want to Wear Visible

Keep Everything You Want to Wear Visible

If you can't see it, you probably won't wear it; thus, Rebecca has stacked and hung her clothes so that everything is visible. Make space for these items by tossing anything you haven't worn in a year and storing items that are out of season.

Make Items Easy to Grab

Make Items Easy to Grab

You'll never lose track of your favorite little clutch when you can see it at eye level in front of you, like the small bags and wristlets that are in mesh baskets in Rebecca's closet. Keeping items visible and within arm's reach, instead of buried at the bottom of a container or stacked so high you need a stool to access it, will help you remember what you have and make you more likely to use it.

07
Designate a Place For Everything

Designate a Place For Everything

It's easier to keep a space clean and items put away when they have a specific spot to go away to. This is especially important with small accessories like rings and earrings that are easily misplaced — which is a problem when you're an accessories designer like Rebecca. To solve this problem, Rebecca designated a spot for everything in her closet down to the tiniest items, which she stores in a divided drawer.
