Kyle Schuneman's Tips For Decorating a Rental

Decorator Kyle Schuneman's Tricks For Decorating a Rental

We are longtime fans of interior decorator Kyle Schuneman and were excited to see a story from Sunset magazine about his tips for decorating a rental.
Kyle is a believer in making every space work for you, no matter how temporary. He offers ideas for fixes that aren't permanent (peel and stick wallpaper) or expensive (paint!) that can translate to even the most desperate of rentals.

For a sampling of his tips read on!

Kyle made sure to purchase items that work well in his current abode but will easily translate to another space, such as the narrow entry table and mid-century dresser at the end of the hall. The cowhide and cardboard mount provide a youthful counterpoint to the Victorian detailing of Kyle's current apartment and won't take up much room when it comes time to move out.
Unable to find a bookcase that fit well into the narrow living room, Kyle built one from scrap lumber and plumbing parts from Home Depot. It fits perfectly (nothing beats custom!) and it can go with him when he moves.
The apartment came with a built-in mirror above the mantel. Instead of removing it and potentially evoking the ire of his landlord, Kyle had a friend's photo enlarged and printed on canvas and hung it over the mirror. To help further define and personalize the space, Kyle used tape to paint bold stripes on either side of the mantel. It adds visual interest but unlike wallpaper, it can be easily erased before moving out.

Thanks for making apartment living look so chic and easy, Kyle! Can we move in with you? For the rest of the article, head over to Sunset!
