Luxury Home Renovations Keep Kids Safe at Home

Would you invest in an at-home DJ mixing studio for your kids?

Would you invest in an at-home DJ mixing studio for your kids? As the Wall Street Journal recently reported, parents are increasingly pouring thousands of dollars into home renovations that include special features for teens and tweens. The goal is to encourage kids to spend less time on electronic gadgets and more time at home where there is some supervision — thus keeping them out of trouble, parents say.

For instance, design and construction advisor Chris Pollack recently completed a $750,000 renovation on a Manhattan townhouse that included a 1,000-square-foot teen suite with ping-pong and billiards tables, a recording studio, a kitchen, and a theater for movies and video games. He has also designed several security camera-equipped homework rooms, "so parents can keep an eye on computer usage.” Similarly, Linda and John O'Hara have equipped the 1,000-square-foot guest wing of their St. Louis home with 16 beds to accommodate teen sleepovers.

Although these renovations may sound extravagant, the parents who are springing for them argue that the features are a sound investment. Not only do they provide peace of mind, they are often easily converted back into an adult space once the child leaves the nest.

"[Teens and tweens] just needed their place to hang out and be kids," says Lee Lovely, who built a comic book-inspired lounge for his two sons. "And the adults probably need the space and tranquility as much as they do."

A Quick Update: Painting Interior Doors Black

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member ourfifthhouse from the Su Casa group: I'd been dreaming of painting the interior doors in my family/living room for.

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member ourfifthhouse from the Su Casa group:

I'd been dreaming of painting the interior doors in my family/living room for. like. ever. I just kept chickening out, worried that maybe I'd regret my decision to paint them. In the end I'm so glad I decided to follow my instincts — after all it's just paint. If I tire of the black I can always repaint . . . but I don't think I'll be tiring of the black any time soon.

Head on over to Our Fifth House for before and after pictures!

Have you completed any decorating projects lately? Be sure to share photos with the Su Casa group!

DiggersList Makes Finding DIY Deals a Snap With New National Coverage

If you're a DIYer, chances are you've spent a fair amount of time combing through Craigslist's seemingly endless list of items.

If you're a DIYer, chances are you've spent a fair amount of time combing through Craigslist's seemingly endless list of items. And while I love the site, those of us looking for a more streamlined approach can save time spent online by using DiggersList. Starting today, the website is expanding to nationwide coverage. This means that any US homeowner looking can buy, sell, or donate home improvement material.

“We’ve received a flood of requests, all over the country, to open up new cities. So we have decided to fast-forward our plans and bring DiggersList to the entire country ahead of schedule,” said Matt Knox, CEO and cofounder of DiggersList, explaining the new expansion.

The redesigned DiggersList uses geo-locating technology, such as that found on your iPhone, to determine a visitor's location and show them discounted home improvement items available in their area. Add to this the site's growing national relationship with Habitat for Humanity ReStores — discount home improvement stores that sell donated items to fund the nonprofit’s philanthropic home-building mission — and DIY home renovators can rest assured they're getting a deal they can feel good about.

I found FSC-certified canary wood flooring (seen in the stair photo) on the site for a discounted price, and am now wondering how it would look in a storage space we're looking to renovate in our home. The site is chock-full of other great items, too, from dining tables to gardening supplies. Want to look for or post an item on DiggersList? It's a free and quick process. Try it out here.

House Tour: A '70s Stucco Home's Much-Needed Update

Terra Firma, a Minneapolis, MN-based custom remodeling firm melds expert craftsmanship and green building practices into its conscientious remodeling work.

Terra Firma, a Minneapolis, MN-based custom remodeling firm melds expert craftsmanship and green building practices into its conscientious remodeling work. Since my brother actually used to work as a finish carpenter for the firm, I've also been able to admire the firm's work up close and personal. I was recently impressed by the firm's renovation of a Lake of the Isles home. Built in 1973, the home's gloomy interior needed some major updates. All in all, Terra Firma renovated or added approximately 5,000 square feet of the home, while also completing extensive repairs on the rotted and crumbling windows and stucco. Take a look at the beautiful work the firm completed on this home.

Before and After: Elle 10's DIY Kitchen Renovation

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member Elle 10 from the Su Casa group: We loved the bones of the house, but clearly it needed some updates.

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member Elle 10 from the Su Casa group:

We loved the bones of the house, but clearly it needed some updates. Over the course of two months, we knocked down two of the walls in the kitchen and moved the plumbing. In fact, we did everything ourselves except new electrical wiring to bring things up to code. We kept the same cabinets, just sanded and repainted them. The ones on the right side now used to be at the far end of the kitchen. We extended the bathroom on the other side of the end wall as the kitchen had plenty of space to work with. I love the gray, magnetic, chalkboard wall and absolutely love the new pass-through and countertop! The floor is in good shape, so we left it for now. Changing that is next on the list!

Before and After: Ashley's Playfully Serene Bedroom

So far, we've toured several rooms in Ashley and Andy's Huntsville, AL, home, including the dining room, their living room, and kitchen. Today, we'll take a look at their bedroom. The couple had plenty to contend with in this room as well, including a giant terrarium left by the prior tenants that once housed an alligator(!), mold issues, nasty carpet, and a closet that needed to be demolished. After a lot of dedication and hard work, they were rewarded with a beautiful bedroom. Let's take a tour and hear what Ashley has to say about this room!

Welcome back to our continuing home tour of photographer and DIY homeowner Ashley Vaughn! In case you missed it, I recommend checking out her living room and kitchen remodels before taking a turn around the dining room. Like those other two rooms in this circa-1903 home, Ashley and her husband Andy had to complete major renovations before it was a usable space. Ready to tour this delightful dining room?

Before and After: Ashley's Ambitious Kitchen Makeover

Last week, I introduced you to photographer and DIY homeowner extraordinaire Ashley Vaughn with a tour of her lovely living room.
Checkered Floors

Last week, I introduced you to photographer and DIY homeowner extraordinaire Ashley Vaughn with a tour of her lovely living room. She and her husband Andy, of Vertical House Records, have given their circa-1903 Huntsville, AL, home a top-to-bottom makeover. The next room that Ashley's sharing with us is her kitchen.

Ashley told me that extensive water damage and poor upkeep made renovating the kitchen a challenge. However, their dedicated effort really shines through in these pictures. Let's take a tour!

Before and After: Ashley's Impressively Improved Living Room

To say that Huntsville, AL, residents Ashley and Andy are ambitious DIYers is an understatement.
Neutral, Clean Walls

To say that Huntsville, AL, residents Ashley and Andy are ambitious DIYers is an understatement. The married duo, who also work together at White Rabbit Studios, a lifestyle photography and design company, completely renovated a circa 1903 home by themselves. The over 2,000-square-foot house includes four bedrooms, two baths, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a deep front porch. Due to mold issues, the entire downstairs had to be torn back to the studs.

Ashley and Andy purchased the property from Andy's father nearly four years ago, and converted it from a duplex back to a single family residence. Over the next several weeks, Ashley will take us on a tour of the renovation, room by room.

We'll start the tour of Ashley and Andy's home with the living room!
