A friend of mine recently emailed me with the exciting news that she'll be in San Francisco in early Winter and is looking for a fun boutique hotel to stay at while visiting. She'll be attending a trade show at the Westin for her hip women's sportswear store, A Stone's Throw, so during the day she'll be located in the Union Square neighborhood downtown. I looked for some boutique hotels that were close to the location of the trade show, but I also included a few farther-flung hotel destinations, since I knew this former competitive cross-country skier wouldn't mind a brisk walk in the San Francisco fog.

My recommendation would be the Hotel Rex but I wasn't able to find rooms in early Winter (Oct-Nov). They were saying everything was sold out and then wanted you to look at other properties. Our favorite hotel is The Donatello. It's not a boutique hotel but it's only one block off Union Square, parking is within the Hotel (unlike a lot of the boutique hotels). The rooms are very large, there is a restaurant and bar, and in the penthouse you'll find hot coffee, local papers and info on points of interest. Rates are reasonable.
