CS: I noticed a literary theme in your decorating: stacks of magazines, old books, typewriters, typography art, and vintage letters. What's the story behind that?
LF: I've always been a big reader, so I love books, magazines, typography, and photography. I naturally gravitate toward art and objects that represent that passion. Outside my bedroom door is a poster with the entire manuscript of Moby Dick printed on it.
When we started having kids, though, is when our house started to look like a library. We made a conscious decision that we wanted them to love books and reading, so rather than tucking all our books and magazines away in cupboards, we had them out in stacks all over the house. Our kids grew up just picking up a book off the pile and flipping through it when they were looking for something to do. On a rainy day, we'd snuggle into the sofa with a pile of 10 or 12 books and plow through them all.
Plus it's cheap and chic decor. You can fill up an empty bookshelf with old magazines and it will look great and cost you nothing.
