We all have a few people in our circle of family and friends who are notoriously difficult to buy presents for. I often take the easy way out in these situations and provide a gift certificate to a store or cafe that this person may love (or just live close to). But sometimes, it's best to have a physical gift with you to give this difficult-to-gift acquaintance. And if the gift goes over well? Then you win doubly big!
My most important word of advice is to keep it simple with the difficult gifters. Think about what you know they love, and then work from there. This isn't the time to get creative or original in your gift-giving patterns. Save that for your artistically inclined and easy-to-please pals. Something I have started doing for my difficult-to-gift friends is making donations to charities I know they support in their name. For instance, I adopt a penguin every year for my penguin-obsessed boyfriend, and I once made a donation to Books for Africa for a curmudgeonly co-worker who volunteered for the organization.
1For me, this person is my mother-in-law. She's a wonderful person and I always try my hardest to find the "perfect" gift for her. I feel like I come up short a lot, though. She's really crafty so I'm thinking of getting her a gift card to a craft supply store this year and wrapping it with a couple small crafting tools. This way she can pick out exactly what she wants, but she'll still have the fun of opening a package.
2I love those notNeutral vases. Almost any woman I know would like those.
3For the most part, I think these are great suggestions. I would feel a little insulted if I got a dust cloth for Christmas, though.
