After much anticipation, I finally saw 500 Days of Summer and loved it! Aside from the easy, romantic soundtrack, hip wardrobes, and counterintuitively hopeful plot, I fell for the movie's interiors, which are charming, inspiring, and easy to reproduce. In the film, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is a recent transplant, and still has a few boxes sitting unpacked in her apartment. She also has plenty of interesting, vintage artwork in ornate gold frames, some well-traveled knickknacks, and as you might expect from any good indie flick, some cool posters.
The most noticeable element of her apartment (a studio, I think) is the blue toile wallpaper you see upon entrance. French toile patterns date back to the 17th century, and they saw a rejuvenation in popularity about 10 years ago, when an antique or country look in interiors became popular. It's unusual to see it used in a city apartment, let alone that of a young woman. But somehow it works flawlessly for Summer, who rides around in a bicycle with a wicker basket, and is seen in conservative ensembles like wide-legged trousers with a vest (a girlish Annie Hall) or delicate, 1940s-style sundresses. You can find a similar blue toile paper by the Wallpaper Company at Home Depot. But, Thibaut Design is also known for making beautiful toiles.
A streamlined iron framed bed with a bit of a vintage feel to it is key. The Pottery Barn Savannah Bed & Headboard ($249-799) is a close match. Summer has strung Christmas tree lights on the frame of hers, giving it a romantic, ambient look when lit. Her nearly white bedding has a subtle pattern, giving it a well-washed, antique look. And, a patchwork throw pillow has nostalgic style. Here are a few products to help you get the look.

Wow, this room is so pretty. Her PJ's are so adorable! I can't wait to see this when it finally opens up nearby.
1Am I crazy or are those closet doors the exact same as the ones in her "The Feel of Cotton" commercial? Casa?
2They are not exact, but yes, they are both French doors.
3It's ok...nothing great though.
4is normal watch the american bedrooms (on tv) with little lights in the bed or in the wall.. nice
5i want to see 500 days of summer since the last year
6i want to see this film soooo bad
7i love her bedroom... i will change to a new house so im looking ideas to decorate
I fell in love with Summer's bedsheets believe it or not - the white with the light blue print pattern of mushrooms.
I've looked all over the place and can't find anything like it (IKEA too). Any ideas?
8My oh my. I am simply in love with 500 Days of Summer. From the design aspects to the chosen actors. Everything was simply perfect. I loved Summer's room and at the moment I am trying to establish a set 'theme'. I am 17 years young living in Australia with my folks and don't have that much money to compensate for a full throttle make over. I am finding it hard to stay with a theme, I love the whole vintage, odd theme, but I dont know how to do it. I have all these photo poster things on my walls as a temporay thing until I get enough money to purchase wallpaper or something. Those these tips are fantastic to reproduce Summer's room, do you have any tips for me on how to cheaply find little vintage one off's to decorate my room?
9I actually have her bedding!! It's a duvet cover from Ikea called Ofelia Skal- it's blue with a white mushroom (or beach ball?) print on one side and is reversible to a white side with blue print (the side that is in the movie). They don't make sheets- if you look closely you can see that they are actually laying on the comforter and not sheets.
I got mine for $15 at Ikea. They don't have it in the online US store but they do have it in the online UK store (and on ebay): http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70131818
