Garden Therapy: Planting Winter Gardens

If you're lucky enough to live in a temperate climate, you might be planting your Winter garden soon. I started to put my garden in this weekend. First I had to clean out the old plants and compost them, then I prepared the soil and planted my seeds. This season, I'm putting in kale, chard, lettuce, garlic, scallions, carrots, and radishes. All of these crops do well in cool weather. Since we rarely, if ever, get a frost in the San Francisco Bay Area, I'll be able to enjoy fresh vegetables all Winter long. Are you planting a Winter garden?

I'm going to pot up some tulip bulbs, so i can have fresh flowers in Feb and March. but outside it to cold here to grow anything.

Yes, and I think I have the very same packet of easter egg radish seeds! I pulled out the summer annuals last weekend and planted chard, mustard greens, yellow onions and green onions. I have carrots, radishes and garlic to plant next weekend. It's my first year doing a winter garden and I'm so excited! Fingers crossed....

I'm going to plant carrots, lettuce, scallions and some winter herbs, but my tomato and pepper plants are still going strong (actually they took eternity to mature so they are just now at their peaks -- planted in MAY!!!) so I won't be pulling them up and planting the other things for ahwile longer.

I'm so jealous of those who live in areas where growing year-round is possible.
