A Coffee Table Book That Treats Flowers Like Centerfolds

We love flowers in almost any form and were absolutely delighted to discover photographer joSon's new book, joSon: Intimate Portraits of Nature ($75). Featuring more than 125 photographs of floral species from around the world, this large format art book is a stunner. Flowers all but pop off the pages thanks to the dramatic black and white backgrounds and joSon's eye brings a sense of movement to the still images.

It came at no surprise to learn that joSon spent his early life in training to be a Buddhist monk. There is something very meditative about the book and it's layout; words are at a minimum, the photos are unadorned by anything except light and the flowers reveal something new each time you look at them. The photos seem to be both an offering and homage to nature.

The series originally began as a class assignment while joSon was completing his master's of fine art and 10 years (and thousands of photos later), joSon is still taking photos of flowers. "I feel that nature is an important source for our daily inspirations whether we are artists or not. For me images of nature always bring a sense of tranquility to my life; that is why they are so often the basis of my work," says joSon.
