A dormer window is a structure that sticks out from a sloping roof, so that the window has a little roof of its own. A dormer comes in different shapes, including arched (curved) or gabled, which means the roof comes to a point like the one at left.

Dormers are designed to increase space, headroom, and sunlight, but the reason I always wanted one as a kid is because they create the perfect nook for a window seat.
