Do You Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products?

Now that we've wrapped up our method giveaways of eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products, I'm wondering how many of you use similar earth-friendly products to keep your house shiny and scrubbed.

I've used eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaners ever since I got my cats. Who wants to use harsh chemicals when there are sweet little paws running across newly-cleaned surfaces, and sniffy little noses 3 inches above them?

I like Mrs. Meyers stuff too, and also try to use baking soda, vingear, lemon, etc. as much as possible. I've also found the eco-friendly dishwasher stuff doesn't quite get the dishes as clean as other things, and justified it's more friendly to wash once than have to do the double-wash.

I started gradually using eco friendly cleaners when I became an employee of a health food store (the discount definitely helps). I definitely recommend Earth Friendly/Ecos products. They are absoutely fabulous and have pretty much everything you need. They even have an industrial line (our store always cleans completely non toxic). Most green laundry detergents are amazing because they are so super concentrated they last FOREVER. And yes, the Ecover stain remover works like a charm. If you want to be sure you're getting up some of the harmful bacteria, try adding grapefruit seed extract to your cleaning products. It is a powerful antibiotic. I've also used it as a produce rinse...and the trifecta is you can use it as an alternative to conventional antiobitcs. In the past I have succesfully treated strep throat by taking it without the help of penicillin.

I use Mrs Meyer's Lemon Verbena everything and I love it. Put it this way, I love the smell so much that I went from hating doing the dishes (no dishwasher in Brooklyn!) that I am now obsessed with the dishes. Also, I just bought the Mabu multi-cloths that I read about on this website, and they are fabulous. Mrs. Meyer's and Mabu are now best friends in my house. I've gotten all my friends hooked.

Yes!! And note to Mamabee, Tide is now making "Tide Essentials" which are green-friendly. Although, Mrs. Meyers (MM) makes well working laundry soap in yummy, light scents such as lemon verbena and geranium. MM counter cleaner, carpet cleaner and dish soap are also nice. I have not tried the dishwasher soap. Also, Ecover stain remover does a commendable job. As Calema noted, dishwasher soap is another story. I try to use eco-friendly dishwasher soap, but sometimes I do need to do a load using Cascade because frankly the dishes don't always get clean with the eco-friendly detergents. Yes, I also rinse and lightly clean my dishes before stacking them in the dishwasher since I only run my dishwasher when it is completely full. The Ecover and Method floor cleaners, especially the ones made for wood are wonderful. Method's almond scent leaves a light pleasant smell. Vinegar and baking soda are also great cleaners which I use often. And sugars, if you have a used lemon, put it down your garbage disposal to leave it smelling fresh (a tip from Martha).

I try to use natural mixes to clean... such as vinegar and water combo, or baking soda paste, etc.. I've also gotten rid of using sponges and started cleaning with reusable & washable items like the cute Hemp Turtle Scrubber. It's made of organic material and can be washed and rewashed over and over... does a better job of cleaning my dishes and surfaces, and I don't need to worry about using harsh chemicals or having germy surfaces. Love it!!

Mrs Meyers makes great products - love the geranium scent. Counter cleaner is great; dishwasher soap leaves much to be desired.

While I love Method's products, I have to admit to still being a Tide devotee. I've switched to HE and try not to use much, but there simply is no substitute (yet!) for the hard stuff when you're dealing with baby stains! Everything else, though, and I try to go green and non-toxic. Ditto on the kitchen-cabinet solution, by the way: vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice really do eliminate the need for the harsh cleansers in the stores, and tend to be better easier on the materials you're cleaning! Check out the books "Home Comforts" (a tome of home care, from cleaning linens to what liability coverage you should have) and "The Guide to 'Good Enough' Housekeeping" for "recipes" for cleansers using household products. The latter is hardly as slacker as it sounds ...

i have tons of cleaner that i purchased in bulk...once it runs out i'm going to start using vinegar and baking soda.

its all i use. like delia said: we try to also use vinegar and baking soda for cleaning with, as well. I don't buy floor-cleaning products or products for counter-tops, as i just use vinegar and essential oils (on the floor not the counter).

I mostly use the Ecover line of cleaning products - their dish soap in particular is fab-u-lous. The range of products is limited, though, so I fill in with other lines like Seventh Generation and Method. Also, I try not to overlook natural products that can be used to clean, like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice.
