Slipcovers are a pretty great invention for klutzes like myself, who often eat, and frequently spill, on the sofa. They can be balled up and machine washed like a coffee-stained white blouse. But they don't look as polished as an upholstered sofa, and unless you have one specially made, the fabric selection is minimal. Do you have one?

I just got a great deal on the perfect sofa and loveseat...except for the fabric! So I'm going to attempt to make fitted covers myself...fingers crossed!
1I haven't before this sofa, which is an IKEA one..I specifically chose a cover that looks really good on it though. Its black velvet, its very fitted and it doesn't look like a "throw-on" cover at all. (I hate those).
2No. I personally don't like slipcovers or plastic covers. For as long as I can remember my parents always covered the sofas in custom made plastic covers. They were awfully hot in the summertime and extremely cold during the winter. Till this day, their sofas are still covered in plastic.
3Yes I do. I bought a really nice white sofa thinking my kids were old enough not to get it dirty. Well they are, but my husband's not!

7ick.. plastic covers would drive me nuts too. i didn't realize people actually used those..
8my roomate and i inherited a ghetto sofa from some people who had stored it in their garage for the past however many years.. we decided to make our own slip cover with a king size sheet set from bed bath and beyond or some place like that.. anyway, we nailed it in to the bottom of the couch, and then pulled it up, and nailed it to the other side so it wouldn't move.. (we didn't have anything else at the time besides nails) then we wrapped the pillows, threw away the ghetto pillows, got really big throw ones, and a bunch of throw blankets and it's still kicking today.. i also get a ton of compliment on the pattern

10I do have a throw that I put over my sofa. It was a fabulous thrift shop find that works perfectly in the room. It keeps the catty-cat kids from ruining the costly fabric that I used when we had the cushions made for the Danish modern sofa.
We have one because the sofa is old and hideous. Good frame but an awful 1970s orange/brown plaid. The cover is a plain beige - not cute but it does the job. We'll replace sofa and cover with a good piece when we move.
I don't really like the slipcover because it's a pain to put on and it never stays in place. I would use slipcovers on chairs -- easier to adjust -- but probably not on a sofa again.
Though I will admit, I'm getting nervous about the idea of having upholstered furniture that can't go in the wash. I've never had to worry about keeping a sofa clean.
11I used to when I had a dog but now that its just the kitty I don't need it.
