I grew up in two different Colonial homes, which each had a staircase leading up from the foyer. It didn't occur to me until I had grown up a bit that not all homes have this feature greeting guests as they enter. For a while, I just thought that's how all homes were built! I love how welcoming the architectural element is, and it allows for fun decorating with statement-making chandeliers! The next time I'm househunting, it'll definitely be on my wish list, but I know that one staircase does not a great house make; of course, I'll have other priorities.
