David Bromstad's Chic Miami Pad Is Upstaged Only by His 2 Adorable Dogs

"I'm known as the color guy," David Bromstad said.

It's true; David has been known for his love of a good hue since he burst onto the HGTV scene almost a decade ago, winning the hearts of network executives and fans alike on the first season of Design Star. Since then, he's gone on to appear in a number of HGTV shows, including Beach Flip, a design and renovation competition that aired this Summer.

Simultaneously, David was in the midst of his own redecorating challenge. He decided to overhaul the look of the Miami apartment in which he'd lived for seven years. David had recently gone through a breakup, and now was living in the home with his two dogs, Miss Lady Godiva Bonbon and Dozer Bubbas.

"I just wanted to go with a much more peaceful, relaxing atmosphere," David said of the makeover. "I love the 'pop' and the 'woo' and the 'wow' and the 'fun,' but I'm at a different stage in my life," he added. "I'm 42."

The home's new look signifies not just a new beginning, but also a sense of maturity. Fortunately, that still means a great deal of color is involved. And David had no trouble finding the right, bright pieces for his project.

This year, David launched his own line of furniture and decor for the online retailer Grandin Road, an experience he calls "my absolute, 100 percent dream." It was important for David to not only create, but also to test out his merchandise. Rugs, chairs, lighting, and more from his own line can be found strategically placed throughout the apartment.

"I just wanted to create a really cool space," David explained. "And I wanted to show people that, yes, I do sell the furniture — but I love it and I have it in my own house."

The home is now a perfect retreat for David during the rare instances when he's not off in a far-flung city or town shooting one of his many projects for HGTV. David has a new program to add to his resumé called My Lottery Dream Home. The pilot, which recently completed a test airing on HGTV, was among the highest rated in network history.

The show represents a new commitment between David and HGTV, one he's happy to foster indefinitely.

"It is like a family — that's why I stay there. They treat their business like a relationship," David said. "The people at HGTV, from the talent all the way down to the secretaries, are amazing. They feel like they know you, and I feel like I know them. They're based in Knoxville, Tennessee, so they have good old-fashioned values."

My Lottery Dream Home will continue shooting in a few months. A rare break in shooting and designing has afforded David a chance to take two special trips: a Disney cruise for the wedding of two friends, and a jaunt to St. Tropez.

But even in the South of France, duty calls.

"I'm getting my inspiration for my new collection for Grandin Road," David said. "What better place to go than St. Tropez?"
