This may sound lame, but my go-to gift as an eco-stylist is to give people a gift card. Hear me out . . . During the holiday season, there are millions of people who drive to their shopping mall to buy gifts, wrap them up, and give them away. On Dec. 26, millions of people drive to the shopping mall to return millions of gifts. It adds up to tons of fuel wasted, gift wrap thrown away, and damaged merchandise that eventually ends up in our landfills. With a gift card, people can buy exactly what they need. No mistakes about it.

On how to personalize your gift card wrapping:

To wrap a card up, I take an old Altoid mint tin, wrap it in paper, fill it with peppermint candies and put the card right on top. Easy, eco, and no waste!

Most gift cards are redeemed online. The point I think he's making is that people can get what they NEED, as opposed to getting something they don't want or will use.

not that I'm not in favour of cutting down on driving (I don't even drive myself), but just pointing out a flaw imo.

eh, I get the feeling that reduction of driving is supposed to make this more eco, but if you drive to buy the card and the receiver drives to the shop to pick out their gift, the driving isn't reduced, if that's his point. If anything, when giving a well considered gift, there's the chance that you hit the target in one go and there's no returning and no driving involved after that!
