If Ikea and the Dollar Store Had a Baby, This Would Be It

Ever walk into Design Within Reach only to find that nothing in the store is even priced within an arm's distance? Then you'll rejoice at the news that the Danish design store Tiger is taking its affordably priced, playful designs across the Atlantic with the intention of making accessible design actually, well, accessible.

Since Tiger opened its doors in Europe in 1995, it has spread to 429 locations in 27 countries. The now $1 billion brand is opening its first US store on May 16 with a 5,000-square-foot storefront in the Flatiron district of New York under the name Flying Tiger Copenhagen.

US shoppers can look forward to Tiger's signature quirky styles, high-quality Danish designs, and jaw-dropping prices. By manufacturing almost entirely in house in Copenhagen, Tiger is able to keep costs down and pass significant savings onto customers; 90 percent of items are under $15, with many below $10.

Among the whimsical roster of flea-market-inspired goods are mustache-adorned coffee mugs, oven mitts with teeth, and handmade blankets. "We don't go out looking to just sell a plate," Tina Kanter, managing director of Flying Tiger Copenhagen, told Fast Company. "When we design, we think about how products can inspire people to live life in a fun way. We want to help change people's ideas about how to spend their leisure time." That's something shoppers at every price point can get on board with!

Not only does Tiger offer a vibrant selection of candle colors, but many are priced under $5!

The store offers a mix of elevated home staples and unique flea-market-inspired speciality items.

Store interiors are clean, colorful, and bright.

The location of the US flagship store in NYC was strategically selected for its proximity to other design brands that Tiger admires, like ABC Carpet & Home.

Its everyday dishware is far from ordinary!

The $1 billion brand will have to wait until May to see if American shoppers flock to it the way European shoppers have.
