In your blog travels, you may have come across the Dekoop Gorgeous Helen Wine Shades ($20), which tops off your wine glasses to make easy votive lamps for your parties. I couldn't get them off my mind for months when I first saw them; I thought they were so clever. Then, lucky me, I came across a DIY to make them. The project is fairly simple, and allows a lot of room for creativity. You can leave yours as plain vellum, or punch decorative holes in them, screen-print them, or even paint them! It's up to you, but regardless, this project is fabulous, inexpensive, and perfect for that wedding you're planning! And for all of our wedding coverage, check out IDoSugar.
Supplies:
- 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of vellum (one per lamp)
- Scissors
- Decorative bladed scissors
- Decorative paper punch
- Glue pen
- Wine glasses
- Tealights or a LED battery-operated tealight
- Candle putty (floral clay)
Here's how, from Save On Crafts:
- Download and print out this lampshade pattern.
- Trace the pattern onto your vellum sheet. Cut out the shape with your regular scissors. If you want, you can use decorative bladed scissors along the bottom edge to add another element to the shade.
- If you like, use a paper punch to punch holes evenly or haphazardly throughout the shade, as shown in the PDF.
- Using the glue pen, apply a thin line of glue to one straight end. Wrap the other end over the glued end, and adhere together, forming the shade.
- Secure the tealight with the candle putty, and set the lampshade on top of your glass. Fini!

Vellum is one of my favorite craft materials.
Scrapbook supply stores tend to stock many different colors and patterns, some already wedding themed. If you aren't inclined to decorate plain vellum, you can be sure to find printed vellum choices that will suit your theme. (You can easily find different varieties online. Be aware, specialized vellum can be a costly purchase. Plain is just as pretty and can be bought in packs for much cheaper than buying many single sheets.)
These lampshades seem simple to create, albeit time consuming if you plan to produce more than a few.
1This is a great project and they really do look elegant in any setting if the glasses are in good condition. I am doing a contract with a company that uses the Helen Wine shades and a lot of people ask about them for purchase.
2My love for Save on Crafts knows no bounds. This is such a fun project!
3These are really cute. I can imagine these on tables for a rehearsal dinner maybe.
4This is a great idea! I just bought gorgeous wine glasses at a consignment shop yesterday and I was thinking about how great they'd look with votives in them to enhance their gray color.
5This is pretty neat!
6So cute! I'm so not having a wedding, but would be really cute for an evening cocktail party.

18Fantastic idea.
19I love the way these look!
20Instead of using floral clay for the candle, you can put a bit of sand on the bottom of the glass and then set the candle on top of that.
21What a great idea....thanks for sharing!

23Flippin' genius! Excellent idea.
24I can't wait to try this!
25omg these are adorable....so creative.
26ok, so does anybody know for sure if a tea light will *typically* cause the vellum to melt/catch fire? I know there are exceptions, and battery-operated ones are recommended for those in doubt, but I just want to know if anybody's done this yet and had any sort of problem.
Thanks!
27Some of these are pleated. Did I miss that instruction? How did you get those looking so good?
