DIY Christmas Ornament Sputnik Mobile Chandelier From Old Brand New
Cool Idea: A DIY Sputnik Mobile
With its satellite shape, the Sputnik-style chandelier become a design icon in the 1950s and is still popular today. Unfortunately, an orbital original will cost you an arm, a leg, and an antennae. Like Katherine Heigl (who owns one), I'm a fan of the space-age fixture, but unlike the starlet, I don't have the dough to shell out for one.
Imagine my excitement when I came across a DIY version. Blogger Old Brand New cleverly crafted his own version of the iconic lamp by clipping leftover Christmas baubles to a satellite-shaped photo clip mobile ($13). While the time to hang Christmas ornaments has passed, I can see plenty of ways to DIY a more evergreen Sputnik-inspired mobile. For instance, glass balls like CB2's Whirly Hanging Candleholders ($4) might do the trick, if securely affixed, or even simple silver or mercury glass ornaments might offer a less "seasonal" style.
