With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. To learn how to make one of your own, read more.
I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.
Here are the steps:
- Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).
- Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.
- If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.
- Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.
- Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.
- Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.
- Set your magazines in the box. Fini!

great idea, but what i'd like to know is where that awesome lace basket came from.
1t3kgirl I was going to say the same thing! That lacey magazine holder is to die for... I do love the idea of reusing cereal boxes, but wonder how sturdy they are? The cardboard doesn't seem heavy enough to hold magazines which when you put a bunch together can be quite hefty.
2i've seen those lacey baskets! if you're in the bay area, there's a place in san carlos called good sage that carries them. they come in green, too.
it's "officially" a bike basket, though, right casa?
3they are a bike basket! I've seen them in Cambridge as well. From what I've seen (in stores or online) they're quite pricey. Definitely a crave of mine.
4Ha! It's actually the Carrie Shopping Basket ($39). I got it at Zinc Details in San Francisco, and just took off the straps. There is also a Carrie Bicycle Basket ($64), which is the same but has attachments for your bike.
The magazine holder seems to be pretty sturdy, but I suppose it varies from box to box, and depending on what magazines you're storing. You could always use bookends.
5I did that with an old cardboard box as a napkin holder for my table. I covered it with the fabric i used for my placemats and throw pillows and now it matches!
6I LOVE the lace basket! That would look super cute in my dorm room! I must have it!
7Thanks tsp, krazykarot, & casasugar for the details, I'm going to have to look around for one (the green sounds right up my alley!)
Casa, I didn't think of using bookends, thanks for the idea; and good to hear that they are holding up nicely. I also have a box of Puffins thats now screaming for a reconstruction... I'll have to find some cute fabric to coordinate with my daughter's room, as she's getting a little collection of magazines that need organizing.
8cool idea and love the lace basket also
9what about glueing wallpaper to the cereal boxes? i got 2 rolls of nice wallpaper for $1 and don't know what to use to glue it to the box?
I subscribe to Shape magazine and have a ton of fitness magazines and to help make more space i cut out all the advertising pages(and then recycled of course)! took me many hours but the stack of magazines went from being able to fit 8 magazines to 12 in a cereal box!
10will spray mount work the same as rubber cement?
11My husband has gobs of cooking magazines and checkout recipe books - this would be an awesome solution for keeping them neat on the bookshelf!
12I've seen this done in many daycares. It gives the teachers something to do while the kids are sleep and it also saves them some counter space.
