DIY: Advent Calendars
The anticipation of Christmas facilitated by my mother's advent calendar was always my favorite part of the holiday season growing up. (These days, it's mulled wine.) But I've never been a fan of those store-bought advent calendars where you opened a little paper door each day. They're cute, but certainly not as fun as a calendar filled with treats or activities. The possibilities for making your own advent calendar are endless, but I thought I'd round up a few DIY projects to inspire you (and woo you away from the drugstore variety).

I made the one with the match boxes many years ago with my grandmother. She filled it with all kinds of crazy things from chocolate to mini dolls to clues to larger gifts. I kept it for about ten years and then it had an unfortunate situation with a cup of mulled wine in which the mulled wine won. I have been considering making a new one for years, and you've just inspired me to finally do it
1My boyfriend went to Finland for a semester a couple years ago so I made him and advent calendar and shipped it to him. I cut little stockings out of felt and decorated them with ribbons and then hung them on a string. Then I filled each stocking with something from home that he missed. He brought it back with him and we still use it.
