Create Bookshelves Out of Attic Room's Slanted Ceiling

Cool Idea: Make Peculiar Proportions a Point of Pride

In older homes, attic rooms with slanting ceilings are very common. While the odd proportions of these rooms can be a challenge, a little creativity can turn them into a useful and treasured feature instead of a design dilemma.

One solution is to do as these homeowners did and build out bookshelves in the few feet of space where the ceiling and floor meet. The beamwork mimics that found on the ceilling, which integrates the look. By painting the shelves to blend into the walls, they nearly disappear, and the books' spines become the focus.

Do you have slanting ceilings or other odd proportions in your home? How do you make them work?
